Kai must have heard our gasps cause he came over seeing what we were holding. He must have read the title upside-down because he almost jumped in surprise.
"Does that say what I think it does?" He asked.
I looked up. "Have you seen his before?" I thought if anyone knew, Kai would.
He shrugged and sat next to me, a tight fit on this sofa but like that was important right now. "There have been rumours but nothing concrete. Where did you find this?"
"From my old school in the bookcase of the headmaster, it was just a feeling of something out of place."
Kai looked at me. "We have to bring it back. It will be missed as soon as he gets into his office."
I clung to the book. Finally it seemed as if something concrete, not just stories or crazy fantasies, had happened to me. I wanted to know as much about it as I could. "No! I will read it first and bring it back after I'm done."
Khuna put her hand on my shoulder. "Let her, Kai. We left as little evidence as possible. They won't suspect it was stolen, just used as a prank or something."
Kai nodded and then smiled apologetically. "Eh... can I read it too?"
Khuna giggled and it made me smile. "What? Oh... Of course, but I'm reading it first."
I nodded.
Valerie came busting in through the door. "Amy! Khuna! There you are. I've been looking all over for you!"
We both looked up, surprise in our eyes. "Why? What's up?"
Valerie panted as she stood in front of us. "You will never guess who I saw!"
Khuna and I looked at each other and both nodded at the same time. We spoke in perfect unison: "The one who turned you?"
The expression on her face was without equal. So many thoughts must have gone through her in such a short time. She started to speak a few times until she found her words again. "He found you?"
We nodded and Khuna spoke. "He told me to look out for Amy and that he'd meet her again much later."
Kai sat next to me just looking open-mouthed from me to Valerie to Khuna. I guess even Valerie had her adventures next to us. In a way we all wanted to speak and keep silent at the same time.
Valerie broke the silence. "He walked by me just after I came from the club. He was kind of like Amy said, I recognized him immediately. He just said one thing before he... well vanished again."
She did something that kind of scared me, she imitated his voice almost perfectly. "Hello Valerie, give my regards to Khuna, Dikaios and Amy."
Silence fell like a heavy blanket. All of us pondering and Khuna and I slightly shocked by the imitation of his voice. I still remembered it so vividly it was like being pulled back into a memory. I shook my head.
"He needs a name." I said.
It broke the silence. "How do you mean?"
"He needs a name, like 'Turner' or something. So we can more easily talk about him."
Khuna nodded. "Turner it is then. So, me and Amy saw Turner in the park, and Val saw him... Hmm... would that have been before or after us?"
I smiled. "Probably before. Though I'm not sure what time we were in the park. Did you notice he used the full names for Val and Kai?"
Everyone nodded.
"I wonder how much that book will say about us or him." Kai mentioned.
Valerie suddenly looked at it as well. "That reminds me, what is that book? It looks old."
I opened the book and opened the second page, showing the title to Valerie.
She swallowed. "That's an old name for vampires. Roman I think." Kai nodded in agreement.
"It comes from my old school, I want to read it first and let Kai research it as well. I have a feeling we should bring it back though. Keeping it too long might actually get people to look for it."
Valerie reached for the book but held back, straightened up and sat on the empty sofa against the wall. "Patience then. I don't like this though, we've never heard from Turner and suddenly he appears to all of us."
"Not to me." Kai replied.
"Yeah, but you're never outside." Valerie giggled.
Kai shrugged, got up and walked back to his computer-corner. "Right, I guess I'll go back to what I was doing."
Valerie smiled against his back but Kai didn't seem really fazed by it. Khuna poked me. "Let's go downstairs."
I nodded and stood up, holding the book close to me and walked towards the stairs. I just noticed Valerie turning on the TV and just relaxing on the sofa. But I could kind of feel her eyes burning holes in my back. We went down the stairs to my room and I sat on the bed, the simple lamp on the ceiling giving off an almost gloomy light. But it was enough.
Khuna sat down next to me, closer to me then I had expected but I didn't mind. It actually felt nice having her close like this. I sighed softly as I relaxed, trying to get my mind clear to focus on the book. It felt heavy in my hands but it was a weight I gladly bore.
I opened the book once more and started to read.
