Back to the echo of my scream.
"Afentis!"
My voice was raw and felt not as my own. My scream echoed over the rooftops and reflected on the higher buildings. I noticed Kryss coming closer, his lackeys or whatever he called them at his side.
Afentis just stood there, watching as Kryss came closer. It almost seemed as if Kryss couldn't see him. Could he block himself out of people's minds or was he just ignored. Not important enough.
It was too late to run, I couldn't get away from them when being this close. But I felt different with his blood running through my body. It felt like lava was running in my veins. Hot, slow and very intense.
I felt stronger.
The other four stood back as Kryss walked closer, sure of himself like always. "Well well well. It seems we finally caught up with you."
"Why can't you just leave us alone?"
"You know very well why I hunt you." His words were calm.
"I will never choose to kill." I replied.
He laughed, loudly. His voice echoing again on the roofs and buildings. "You think that's the reason I hunt you? You're more foolish then I thought. I've no sympathy at all."
Thoughts raced through my head. Not the killing? I knew they killed. Drained them empty and got rid of the bodies. I thought they hunted me for that. Because I didn't kill. I was a disgrace to the species to them. But if that was not it... Then what?
"Then why?" I cried.
"You deserve no explanation. I will take care of you here and now." He wasted no time and dashed forward, a punch that would have broken my ribs if I didn't see it coming.
But I did.
It was as if I was back in the laundromat again. He used the offence I used back then, expecting me to defend like he did. But to me, he moved even slower now than he did back then. I didn't even think, I just sidestepped in reflex to escape his blow.
He growled as he hit the air and turned to throw another punch, as fast as he could.
But still I saw it.
I noticed his strength. He was probably still somewhat stronger then me, or close at least. But this was no issue. I looked around and saw Afentis smile and run. It was so fast none of the others would have seen anything but him disappearing. Even to me he was almost a streak, dashing away. But it didn't feel like a goodbye. More a 'see you later'.
I sidestepped again, avoiding his blow. He punched again but this time I caught it. Not easily, unfortunately, but I was able to hold him, just. Surprising him enough for an escape.
I hoped.
I pulled him further, sidestepping again and pulling his punch beyond what he wanted, pulling him over. I hoped to do this fast enough to get him past the edge of the roof.
As I threw him over the edge I suddenly remembered something important.
The street.
It wasn't the busiest street in town, but still. He was tumbling to a public street. Bad. Very bad.
Focus. I moved toward the other edge, the little alleys and such in the back. A fire escape was close to me. Not a clean or useful escape, but it could do to get down fast as soon as they lost their attention. The others stood still on the roof, doubting between following me or their leader.
I was lucky. They moved away.
Only a few steps and I was on the street. A few more and I disappeared among the crowds. They wouldn't be able to find me easily like this. They didn't like the crowd. They didn't like being among other people. They were monsters and proud of it.
I heard a scream of rage.
I couldn't help but smile.
