Kai smiled, proud of his work probably. "Amy, you said you got that book from your school's headmaster right?"
I nodded.
"Well, I've tried to track him down, from his name to what he used to do and everything. Which wasn't easy I can tell you. I had to look up the school's financial data first to get the name and..."
"Get to the point." Valerie said, smiling as if this had happened before... often.
"Eh... well he was quite the scholar. A historian even. He did a lot of research on an old abbey named the Silver Abbey. He put a lot of what's in that book together I presume. Though there is something strange about that book I found out as well." He took a deep breath to continue. "It wasn't printed or published anywhere I could find. And such a book, even dating back a hundred years should be able to be found. I even went to some old bookstores around here, but no one had even heard of that book, or anything like it."
Kai must have seen my look. "Don't worry, I was VERY discreet, asked them if they could help me find an old book of my granddad for my library. Always works. They're happy to talk to a 'fellow enthusiast'" He winked. "Anyway, there are some really interesting myths about the Silver Abbey. That it was a place of paranormal research. Like witchcraft, alchemy, sorcery and of course vampirism."
Valerie nodded. "We kind of got that impression. Though at the moment they seem more like a cult."
Kai frowned, as if he was trying to fit some puzzle pieces together. "You know, that makes sense. All the weird myths I found changed drastically after the Silver Abbey burned down ninety-seven years ago. Any 'sightings' were more of people in identical simple clothing, like old-fashioned brown robes or something. It's really hard to trace though, you know how rumors on the Internet are." He shrugged.
I smiled. "They were right though. Brown monk robes, including the hoods. And the way the procession went I thought they were a weird cult hunting for vampires or something."
Valerie nodded. "Yeah, something like that at least. They reminded me of a teachers meeting or something mixed with some religious crap."
Kai frowned in thought again. "Well, you know Amy, your headmaster wasn't a very religious man as far as I could tell. Just a scientist, interested in getting the truth uncovered. Perhaps he was an outcast?"
I shook my head. "They said the book was safe." But I thought. "Although... why didn't they have the book there, to read from, to learn from." I sighed. "No use talking about this, only speculation unfortunately. Kai, did you find anything else of importance?"
"No, but there is something you could do for me, both of you."
Valerie looked as surprised as I felt. "Like what?"
"Tell me what that girl looked like that's in our safe-house now."
"Her name is Isabel, I'd estimate her about eleven years old, very blond hair that's almost white with a golden sheen. Pale, slim, short, this height." Valerie held out her hand beneath her chin. "And incredibly blue eyes. Very light and intense."
Kai grinned. "Shouldn't be hard to find. I want to know more about her." He looked around. "It's almost dawn though, where's Khuna?"
"Eh... she..." I began. "She might be staying somewhere else. We ran into Kryss."
Kai nodded grimly. "Okay, we'll see her again." He turned back to his screens and went back to his business.
Valerie pulled my arm, she looked at me without a word, knowing that even the slightest whisper would be picked up by any of us anyway. It was weird, I had the impression she didn't want Kai to know about the dream-world and stuff. I wanted to shrug, didn't think of it as a big deal anyway but nodded, to give her a sign of trust. She leaned over to kiss me on the cheek and smiled thankfully.
She headed downstairs, she looked really tired.
I followed in her step, knowing I still had some time before the sleep would drag me I went to my room and undressed after I closed the door. I got the book and started to leaf through it. There was something specific I was looking for and I had a good idea that it would be in there.
It was.
'History and purpose of the Silver Abbey'
I settled down to read...
