Chapter 69About Almost Away

I was still staring into space as Kai retracted the screen and started working again. Kai was feverishly working on his laptop, the keys making more sound again. I hoped he was trying to get the code to get us out of this room. I already felt claustrophobic.

I asked myself; 'what more did I want to find here.'

All the knowledge was much more than I originally wanted, things I wasn't sure I was happy with. But that's the thing with knowledge. You can't choose what you get to know, only what you wish to know. It occurred to me power and bliss were mutually exclusive.

I grimaced a little as all these thoughts crossed my mind. I tried to keep it all together but I just couldn't. There were so many memories fighting for attention. Trying to piece together all that I had seen before to understand things. Kai whispered to me, it was the one thing that got thought to me.

"I've copied as much as I could, we don't need to check upstairs."

I paused for a moment and then nodded. "Go?" I spoke as softly as possible.

Kai nodded and walked to the door, entering a code on the keypad and unlocking the door. The camera had stayed off all this time, at least there was no light burning underneath, so we made our way up the stairs. Someone was there, and he'd seen us...

The boy...

This time he was awake. Why was he here? He wasn't supposed to be here, he was supposed to be back in bed or something. Even worse... He screamed, he screamed as loud as his little voice could.

We ran toward the exit, not too fast as we didn't want our running footsteps to be heard when someone silenced the boy. It was only two more turns and a corridor. Run, keep going, keep focused.

Almost, the door outside in front of us. Blocked by a guy dressed in white clothing. I was looking at Kai and bumped right into him. He made a grab for me, getting hold of my arm. I panicked and froze. Not wanting to hurt him, but not wanting to stay here.

It was stupid, I know, I could easily break free if I wanted to, but I was still so confused about everything. Kai, fortunately, had put everything properly away into his backpack. I had to break free of my captor and fright. Come on Amy! Focus! You can do it, you did it before!

"Hey! You're not allowed here!" The guy held on to my arm, Kai stood still, looking at my eyes, wondering if he could do anything.

It was up to me.

I really hated to do it, but I turned around using my strength, dragging the doctor with me in a circle and basically slamming him against the wall suddenly. The element of surprise of it was probably more than the actual pain. He wasn't unconscious, though definitely dazed for a moment. I grabbed Kai's hand and dragged him out of the welcome open door. The smell of cigarettes burning in my nostrils as we got outside. He must just have been smoking here.

Where to go?

The street here was empty this late. How long did we take inside. I heard a siren only a street away. Could we jump up somewhere? The building itself was only two stories so it was possible. I turned around and grabbed Kai by his hips. No time to explain. He got the idea though and we jumped on the roof together, not a moment too soon.

We both lay down flat on the roof, surprised by how clean it was until we noticed a door leading up to here. Kai was looking at me with fear, surprise and admiration. His mouth worded something to me I didn't really understand.

Feral.

No time for this though. The buildings around were almost as low as this one, but too far away to jump. The courtyard around the building didn't make it easier. And the building touching the back of this building was a high apartment building, with some lights still on. Downstairs we heard the police car stopping in front of the building, possibly a routine check gone awry or they were just nearby as they sounded the alarms. Better safe than sorry for them.

Here we were, on the roof, nowhere to go that wouldn't be seen or noticed by someone else. We couldn't just climb the walls of a normal building and the street wasn't an option. How well had the guy in white seen us, would he be able to describe us or did the smash into the wall bump his head enough to make him forget.

I looked around again, the distances were just too much to jump. I couldn't jump across the courtyard on either side and the back was just too high. Our only blessing that they did not expect us to be here.

Were we trapped?
