Chapter 130Other Eyes 3 - A New Surprise

There is always something disconcerting when waking up in an unknown bed. I wasn't entirely unaccustomed to sleeping in unfamiliar places. But this time so many things had changed in a short time that the ceiling, different from before, was actually bothering me. Moments passed until my groggy mind finally figured out where I was and what I was supposed to do.

Someone knocked on the door of my room.

"Khuna, are you awake?" Valerie's voice.

I smiled. "Yeah, I'll be right out."

Getting myself dressed I noticed my soft skin, completely healed from all the strange things that had happened to me in the past two months. I did miss Amy, but I was confident I would be able to find that bracelet for her. And of course I wanted to be the one to give it to her when she returned.

Valerie stood in front of the door, all dressed and ready. "So, do you have a plan?"

A memory poked at me from my dreams. "Yes!" Half-surprised myself. "In fact I do."

She looked surprised. "You do?"

I nodded. "Yes. We're going back to school." A grin played cheerily on my lips.

Valerie looked slightly confused, but shrugged. We headed downstairs where, slightly to my surprise, Kai was waiting for us. He was fully dressed and was wearing a backpack. Yet he looked slightly evasive. I wondered what was going on.

"Evening, I've got some things to do tonight. I'll also try and arrange a more suitable location soon." He sounded a bit sad.

"What's wrong Kai?" He was getting me worried.

"It's nothing, I just need to get things in order."

Valerie put her hand on my arm. "Alright, we'll be going out as well. Kai, good luck."

Kai smiled and went out of the house. There was a key on the table next to the door, presumably an extra key to the front door. Valerie picked it up and turned around, looking at me.

"Any particular school we're going to?" She smiled a little.

"Yes, Amy's old school." I smirked a little.

"Because?" She sounded slightly doubtful.

"It all started there. I have a strange feeling it might end some things."

She shrugged once and smiled. "Alright, let's go then."

She closed the door, locking it, behind us as we started walking. The streets were surprisingly busy with people. But not a single one of them paid us any undue attention. It was the first time, since I heard about Kryss's death, I walked the streets. It felt lighter now, safer. The neighborhood around Amy's old school wasn't as crowded, in fact there wasn't even that many people awake, considering the lighting in the houses.

The school itself, however, looked almost alive.

Like last time, it was almost like a low gothic cathedral. The lighting was sublime and the darkness of the school itself did not help much. Of course, the layout was still relatively simple. We jumped over the main gate and very carefully made our way to the roof. We didn't jump, but used the rain pipe to climb up.

Getting inside was not a problem either. Via the clock-tower it was merely a question of ducking and walking in, more or less. I still remembered everything and, if it wasn't so obvious, I'd feel as if Amy was walking next to me here. Valerie just kept quiet though, following my every move carefully and precisely. She was no more than a shadow, but it felt better. I didn't want to explain everything and having her just follow me for now was easier.

Even if it made me feel a bit guilty.

We walked inside, to the front entrance but I stopped her. "Wait here."

She nodded silently.

I obtained the key like I did before, slightly surprised they hadn't moved them much, or that there wasn't a lock on the drawer by now. There were a lot of implications. Did they never figure out there had been thieves inside?

Brandishing the keys I dragged Valerie to the headmasters office. The door still had that slightly ominous look to it that would strike fear into the heart of students. Briefly, I wondered how much myth such a door received.

"We'll check here first." Probably more for myself than for her.

After a few tries I found the right key. The room still looked mostly like it did before. My eyes immediately darted to the place Amy found the book. There was another book there, slimmer but in the same black leather cover. Although, it looked a lot newer. Valerie looked closely as I picked it up and opened it.

"This is weird..." I couldn't believe my eyes.

"What?" Valerie asked softly.

I showed her. The pages in the book were all blank, leafing through it showed nothing. No page numbers, no text. It appeared as if this was nothing but a decoy, but in the front was an envelope, slightly behind the cover. I opened it carefully and wasn't ready for the surprise it gave me.

It was addressed to us!
